All is Very Well in Cartagena. Todo va Super Bien en Cartagena.

All is well in Cartagena!  Last week they had 30 discussions, of which 15 were with investigators.  the others would have been mostly with less-actives.  However, Adrian, who was intending to be baptised on 1st June, is very busy so it has been necessary to postpone his baptism, until when they don't know at the moment.  Neftalí is also very busy with his studies, but he is still on course to be baptised on 8th June and they are very excited.

Elder Read and his companion are working very hard together.  They are teaching a lot and with more power; and he thanks us for our prayers.  The photo above shows them with a less-active member who accompanied them on a teach.

Yesterday they spent P-Day at the chapel. They took guitars, which suggests that Elder Sandelin is also a musician, and a ball so they could play basketball.

Elder Read says how wonderful it is that Trystan Simpkin is going to serve his mission in Zimbabwe.  He wants photos and he sends Trystan his congratulations.

It appears that they have calor gas in their flat and they need a new gas cylinder, so they've had to take cold showers!!  They hope to have the money soon to get the cylinder.

The photos below are of an activity where they were cooking - and the food was delicious!!

Another baptism coming up and lots of photos. Otro bautismo y muchas fotos

Elder Read arrived in Cartagena three weeks ago yesterday.  Elder Read llego a Cartagena hace tres semanas de ayer.
Now the sister is out of the way (unlike in last weeks' photo) we can see Elder Read at this Zone Training meeting in Cartagena.

On P-Day yesterday. Elder Sandelin, Elder Read's companion, is in the white cut-offs on his right.
P-Day ayer.

Elder Read says he's tired and a little stressed but he's delighted to receive photos in the post from both ourselves and Elder Hinman and the YSA.  The Zone Leaders and  the President are fasting a lot, which is paying off as they have another baptism set for the 8th June.  He is a young man by the name of Neftali, so they are very excited.  Elder Read asks for us to continue to pray for him and his companion and that the investigators will enter the waters of baptism and remain faithful.

Here's another photo, this time courtesy of Wayne Herridge.  I don't know when or where it was taken, but it shows it's a small world.

Amalia has seen on the Mission blog a photo of an elder with the same name as the elder who baptised her in Paris in 1989 - and he looks like him.  He could easily be his son - so watch this space! If and when Elder Read sees him he will ask.  He says he's very excited to find out.
E

One Week in Cartagena - Una Semana en Cartagena

Elder Read is now in his second week as District Leader in Cartagena and he says that his first week has been very good.  They met a young man called Adrian by "a miracle."  The Sisters met him on a bus and invited him to English classes - and he went!  When they spoke to him they discovered that he lived their area.  They were able to give him a short lesson after the English classes, taught him again the following day and invited him to be baptised on 1st June -which he accepted.  He says perhaps this is what he has been seeking all his life, which makes Elder Read and his companion Elder Sandelin very happy.

Yesterday, Elder Read went to Málaga yesterday, to the Mission Home for the training of District Leaders.  He says he was really looking forward to seeing his friends, the Mission President and his family, and he is really looking forward to Hermana Deere's cooking, although he makes a point of saying that he still prefers his mother's!  On Monday they went for a little trip with the Zone Leaders.

They have an investigator who is in the army, so he will be very keen to see the photos of Elder Read in the cadets, which I have just posted to him.

Elder Read and his companion came across this, which appears to be a dried out river, on their way to a house.

This is the map of a town that they have.

Rather interesting, with the reflection of a parrot!
Interesante con la reflexión de un papagayo!

The road they took to another house!
All the members of the Zone.  What a shame the sister is almost hiding Elder Read!

Music - La Musica

When Elders Read and Write (Wright) went to Huelva Elder Wright was able to assist the ward by playing the piano in Sacrament and Priesthood and, when he was replaced by Elder Rodriguez, Elder Read took over.

Now Elder Read is in Cartagena First Ward he once again finds himself playing the piano.  The picture shows the Spanish hymn book open at Israel, Jesús os llama, or Israel, Israel, God is calling.  He hadn't played hymns very much before he went on his mission so he needs to practise.

This is Elder Read with  Sister Maria del Marand  a brother in Huelva.

Did you see this  photo last week?  Elder Read sent it again today and it is of him and a family in Huelva.

Yesterday was Mothers' Day in Spain so we got to speak to our missionary on the phone.  As district Leader in Cartagena he has a big challenge on his hands, because the sacrament attendance is only 45 and they have a very large number of less-active members.  We understand this well, because when we arrived in Huanchaco, Peru we found a very similar situation.  However, with the missionaries, we were able to convert the branch into a ward.

However, Cartagena 1 is already a ward, and in Cartagena there are 3 wards: Ward 1, Ward 2 and Ward 3, all sharing the same chapel, which is the stake centre.  For this reason it is a District of the Mission.

This is one of the last photos taken in Huelva.

Hoy Elder Read escribe:

Today Elder Read is going to play "ping-pong" in the chapel and ten they are going to have their hair cut.  He says his companion wanted to wait until Saturday but it's too long and needs to be done now!  They have an appointment with the hairdresser at 15.30.  She is a member and cuts their hair fro nothing!

Traslado a Cartagena - Transferred to Cartagena

Elder Read is in Cartagena.  He was travelling all day Monday, starting at 9 o'clock in the morning when  he took a bus to Sevilla, where they had to wait an hour.  They met some English people on the bus, who weren't really very interested but he did invite them to read the Book of Mormon.  He arrived Granada from Sevilla at 11.15, and then in Murcia at 3pm.  He then took the bus to Cartagena at 7pm and arrived in Cartagena at 8.15.

The Mission has called Elder Read as District Leader in Cartagena.  He has a district of 10 Elders and Sisters and lots of baptisms are taking place, so he's very excited to be working there.  His new companion is called Elder Sandelin, is described as being from  Switzerland/Chile and is very good.  In a few weeks they'll be off to Málaga for training.

The photos are of Elder Read's last Sunday at the Huelva chapel and of a barbecue  they had at the chapel.
