Traslado, pero a donde? Transferred but to where?

Elder Read was expecting his transfer to take place on Wednesday, meaning that he would have his P-day as usual today and be able to write as normal.  However, the Mission Office told him yesterday that he would be going we know not where today.

Consequently, we have no e-mail from him, but we did hear from Hermana Maria last night, although we were hoping that he would have found time to let us know where he was going.  She was disappointed that Elder Read wouldn't be able to visit them on Tuesday afternoon to say goodbye as planned.

The photo shows a primary activity that took place last Friday.  The sister on the left is called Galicia and Hermana (Sister) Maria is on the right with a child in her arms.  They are making cakes with the children.  Maria says that Galicia is the mother of the missionaries!  Lucky them!

  1. Anyway, I'll get up to date with what's been happening to Elder Read.

Here is  zone training  where they are all displaying Uno cards, uno being the Spanish for one, of course, to emphasise Strengthening the One.  The photo below appears to show a diagram we were shown on the high council In Portsmouth Stake about eight years ago.  It is good to see it resurrected for currently serving missionaries.

Predicad me Evangelio -  Preach My Gospel.  They must have been on an exchange.

The lucky Elders were taken out for a meal at a chifa - a Chinese restaurant.

Nine year old José Luis was baptised on 13th April by Elder Rodriguez and confirmed the following day by Elder Read.

Apparently Colombiana  is a really nice drink, but now the bottle goes into the bottle bank.

    It's making me thirsty!

More food.  This time it's churros.  They're fritters made from flour and water and are often eaten with thick hot chocolate, which it looks as if Elder Read has.  They are delicious!!!

This is Elder Rodriguez, not the Elder Rodriguez we had a photo of a couple of months ago.
The news is that there will be transfers next Wednesday and Elder received a phone call from the mission president to say that he would be moving. But he didn't say where, so watch this space!

Monday 8th April 2013

This photo was taken on 13th March during what must have been a Zone meeting.  Elder Read is really great at keeping us supplied with photos, but he leaves us to guess what they're about!

Elder Read's Easter parcel arrived all right but, needless to say, the chocolate didn't last very long.

He and his companion went to the stake centre in Sevilla for General Conference, which he describes as brilliant: the Spanish word genial, which shows just how comprehensive his Spanish now is.  The conference delighted him, but he writes about the adult session and I don't know what he means as we don't have one in English.  Could he mean the Priesthood Session which is now available online?  Anyway, he says  he felt: "I know Christ lives.  I know, with all my heart and soul, and I can never deny it."  Wonderful!!

It was a little different listening in Spanish, but it was still wonderful.  That's true. I used to find it a little disconcerting to see the lips moving in English but to hear Spanish.  It just seemed odd!

They are excited about the baptism next Saturday.  What has happened is that the mother isn't quite sure whether she wants to be baptised.  Her nine year old son, on the other hand, is completely sure, so they are hoping that his example will help her to make the decision to go ahead the following week.so we are asked to pray for them.  Her name is Sari.  We are also asked to pray for Huelva Ward which needs plenty of help.

El otro paquete a llegado y me gusto mucho. Muchísimas gracias :) Pero el chocolate no duró mucho tiempo... La conferencia general era genial. ¡Me encantó!

Out Four Months Today - Cuatro Meses Hoy

This was Elder Read four months ago today!  Fue Elder Read hace cuatro meses hoy!
How time flies. We still miss him of course, but he's doing the Lord's work and working extremely hard, with two more baptisms coming up shortly.

Here are a couple of photos of la Samana Santa - Holy Week - actually taken by Sister Deere, wife of the Mission President, with her captions:
Here's a very brief glimpse of Semana Santa in Spain.  There are processions everywhere, and we went to see this one in Malaga. These robes and tall pointed hats represent the penitent, and some wearers walk barefoot or carry chains or shackles.

The processions have representations of Mary, and of Christ on the cross.  It seems all of Spain this week was sitting downtown watching a procession every day.  This "trono", (float or throne) was carried by about 50 men, and it swayed with each step they took.  The tronos can weigh up to 5,000 kilos.

Elder Read and Elder Rodriguez were too busy to see any processions in Huelva.

New Shoes and Baptisms - Zapatos Nuevos y Bautismos

Elder Read sent this photo and three others with no captions today, so all we can do is to guess!

The shoes we sent a few weeks ago have finally arrived: yesterday morning while Elder Read and Elder Rodriguez were studying. He was pleased with both the shoes, which he is wearing already, and also the photos we included.

The week just gone was an excellent week.  They have arranged a baptism for a nine-year-old boy.  It will take place on 13th April, so they are very excited, saying that the boy is golden.  And his mother will be baptised the following week, on 20th April, but she's not quite ready, so please pray for her. Her name is Sari.

Their new convert, Tomás, to whom they gave an administration last P-day, is a little better, but not well enough to attend church on Sunday, so they took him Sacrament, so they were able to cheer him up.

It's raining cats and dogs, so Elder Read says it feels just like England, especially as there's also plenty of sun: just like an English April!

He has found a Latin-american shop where he bought Chicha Morada, which he's enjoying.  They also sell Inca Cola, Peru's favourite cola, but it was too expensive to buy.  He asks his Mum to send him the recipe for how to make mazamorra.

So it's been an excellent week and a little lower down are the other three photos he's sent:

Holy week was just an ordinary week for the two Elders, but they saw many miracles: another baptism date and new investigators.  They didn't see any Easter processions, but no matter; the Lord's work is more important.

Elder Rodriguez, says Elder Read, is an excellent lad, who he really enjoys working with.
This would appear to be all the zone. Aparentemente eso es toda la zona.

Here is Elder Read with Elder Blanch, who has just gone home.

Here he is with Elder Geest.  I'm guessing that this was on an exchange.
